You've figured out how to use VPN on your computer and tablet, but now you'd like to use the VPN to watch your favourite shows on a smart TV or device. This could include the Apple TV,Nintendo Wii, Playstation or maybe an Xbox 360.

This title to this post is a little misleading because there is currently no way to setup VPN directly on Smart TVs because most don't allow third party applications to be installed on them and their network settings are restricted. The only solution to using a VPN on a Smart TV is to run the VPN through a flashed router, or a router with replaced firmware. Alternatively you can connect your Smart TV to a shared VPN connection which is much simpler to do.

How to share the VPN connection on Windows

Before you can watch Netflix or Hulu or BBC iPlayer on the TV, you need a fully functional VPN subscription. If you haven't subscribed to our VPN already, do so here: . Next, make sure the VPN connection is setup correctly: This is important, you must use the OS's built in VPN connection method and not any other VPN app. If you need help with this, see

The next step is sharing the VPN connection.

Go to the taskbar and click on the connection icon. You will see the VPN connection you just created. Right click on the VPN and select properties. Choose the sharing tab and check on “Allow other networks users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection”

Step Two
Next, you need to share the VPN with a connection that you aren't already using, for example if you're connected to the Internet via WiFi, share your VPN with your Ethernet and then connect the TV to the unused Ethernet port. For this to work, you have to share the VPN to an inactive connection.

Step Three Finally, click OK and reconnect to the VPN to enable sharing and connect your TV or device.

Using a flashed Router

Using a flashed router is a slightly more complicated approach but it's biggest advantage is that you only need to set it up once and it works for all the devices in your network. DD-WRT firmware can be installed on the typical home use router to enhance its network capabilities. If you don't want to tinker with your current router, you can buy one with DD-WRT pre-installed
